Today I Met God
Not merely in figurative terms. Notjust as a character in the epic drama
of creation captured within the pages of the Bible. Not only through the
sharing of communion.
I met God in the flesh and blood.
So what was God like?
She had shoulder length black hair. Thick red glasses were perched
upon her old and weathered nose. And a pocket watch hung around her
neck on a blue lanyard. She was wise and yet a bit confusing. She had a
deep and unconditional love for all people that manifested itself as an
unquenchable thirst to meet others, one at a time, where and for who
they are. And she was a creator; the inspiration behind many beautiful
works of art and the author of many touching poems.
I was given a vivid glimpse of God in a very unexpected way. I walked away from a seemingly trivial conversation enveloped in the abundant life and peace of which our Creator is the sole author and perfecter. I had in fact had a face-to-face encounter with a pocket watchwearing, red eye glass-adorned Lord of all creation.
But don't we expect God to turn up in bigger ways? Sometimes we get so caught up in seeking out remarkably "moving" religious experiences that we overlook the simple truth that God isn't stuck in the proverbial "out there" of the world around us. We don't need to go on a life-altering pilgrimage to
experience the fullness of God.
God is right here among us and IN us, perhaps in the most nassuming
of people and experiences.
May we all approach the world around us with fresh eyes and open
hearts, seeking to encounter God in not only the extraordinary but also
the ordinary.
Trust in God,
Paul M. Clark
